Match Day 1. Nelson Bay v Swansea.
A new season and a slightly different line-up for The Bay. Last year’s runners-up and major premiership winners have 3 new signings. Blake, Zac and Tyler, all bought in the off season to help boost the team’s strength.
Also, the team has new management. All the way from sunny Cornwall, Clare and her Scottishish husband, Scott, ( the dynamic duo) who were snapped up for a few quid and a pint of beer. Welcome aboard to you all and have a great season.
It was very warm day for the first match of the season.
Both teams stood at the half-way line shaking hands again, as they had played a friendly match not long ago which ended in a 1-1 draw.
FIRST HALF HIGHLIGHTS
The whistle was blown and Nelson Bay attacked Swansea through the middle. Blake and James, the David Beckham lookalike, past and dribbled the ball through the opposing midfield players. The attack was stopped by some good defending and the ball was cleared from danger, a promising start.
Ten minutes in, both teams fought to take control of the midfield. Brett, Bailey, Crystal and Cameron held the Blues at bay and were nearly rewarded for their determination. A long ball from the centre found Blake at the edge of the area. He passes two defenders and with only the keeper to beat, bends the ball the wrong side of the woodwork. Bad luck Blake.
Minutes later, James came close to scoring. From just outside the penalty area he shots. The ball whistled past the top right corner of goal. If that would of found the net it would of burnt a hole in it! Great attempt James.
Swansea came close opening up their account when a long range shot had Liam fumbling the ball. Luck was on his side as the striker missed a golden opportunity and kicked the ball over the bar.
5 minutes remained and Swansea started to attack in force. Zac, Thomas and Jasper were outstanding keeping the visitors away but it seemed like the visitors would score at any moment as the heat started to tier the players.
Finally the ref blew for half time and the Bay members headed towards the coach for much needed rest and water.
HALF TIME
With the score locked at 0-0 the coach and assistant manager had some work to do to lift the teams’ spirit up. To concede a goal could suck the life out of the players as the temperature was slowly rising.
As last minutes instructions were being discussed about, the ref was in the middle blowing for the team to take to the field.
SECOND HALF HIGHLIGHTS
Both teams knew that whoever made the first mistake could sink the other. It was Swansea who made that error. Crystal and Steven worked well down the left and passed Swanseas’ defence. The ball was crossed from the side and Swansea were slow to clear it out. Tyler, making his debut match was alone at the rear post and slotted the ball home.
GGGGGGGOOOOALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL 1-0
The Bay attack from re- start . This time, Cameron had an opportunity. His shot just went over the bar. Swansea started to panic.
Bailey was the next player to capitalize. He passed a couple of defenders and headed towards goal. The keeper rushed out and was almost upon the ball when Bailey calmly slotted the ball past him. Great goal Bailey
GOALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL 2-0
The Bay were very confident and it started to show. Again Swanseas’ back line let them down as Brandon, Bailey, James and Cameron waltzed through. The crowed sensed another goal but this time, Swansea pulled one back. A couple of defensive errors saw the score board tick over to 2-1
GGGGGOOOOAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL 2-1
The coach and assistant coach started to feel nervous. Another goal to Swansea would open up the match. Swansea had everything to play for.
With only minutes remaining, Nelson Bay got the winner. Brett pounced on a loose ball in the area and fired the ball into the net
GGGGOALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL 3-1
The ref blew for full time and the crowd cheered the players off the pitch.
